Why Do States Have Capitals?

A state capital is the city that serves as the official seat of government for that state, housing the state capitol building and legislative chambers. Interestingly, in many US states, the capital is not the largest or most famous city. For instance, the capital of New York is Albany (not New York City), and the capital of California is Sacramento (not Los Angeles or San Francisco). This was often done intentionally by early American legislators to prevent political power from being overly concentrated in major commercial hubs and to make the state government more accessible to rural residents.
